Notes from the director
By Carolyn Barske Crawford
MSNHA director
Hello. MSNHA friends!
While the sun is shining and the weather is slowly shifting to summer, we are still in the midst of some confusing and stressful times. Museums, historic sites and other cultural venues across the MSNHA are beginning to open their doors and some of our partners are moving forward with events again. We ask that everyone who visits museums and other attractions practices proper social distancing – we want you all to stay safe.
We’ve been plugging away here at the MSNHA office. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve wrapped up work on an educator resource packet about Lawrence County history developed by University of North Alabama students Gabel Duke and Ryleigh Hilliard. It will be ready to go out to all 4th-grade teachers once schools in Lawrence County open back up. The project was supported by a grant from the Alabama Community Capacity Network. We’re also excited to start working with our new AmeriCorps member, Eero Wilson. You may know Eero from the Spinning Spoke and the Shoals MTB Club. He’ll be working with us on developing recreational programming (we’ve got some cool, socially distant recreational opportunities coming up this summer – stay tuned!), helping to get our Tennessee River curriculum into local schools and planning for a new Kids in Kayaks program, which we will launch in the summer of 2021. We are also working on a new website for our Hidden Spaces project. Graduate student Tori Shaw has been busy conducting oral history interviews for her project on LGBTQ+ history in the Shoals. She’s adjusted well to conducting interviews via Zoom! Graduate student Josh Grigsby is also with us this summer – he’ll be working on some social media series for us during June and July, so make sure you are following us on Facebook and Instagram.
Stay well, everyone!
